Bolt Insights | Fabricated by Design

At Bolt Builds, design and fabrication are rarely a separate conversation. For a majority of our projects, they’re part of one continuous, integrated process. We prefer to make what we design, and that philosophy shapes how our projects moves from concept to reality. By offering digital fabrication services in-house, our team keeps projects under one roof from early prototyping to final installation. This ensures tighter quality control, faster iteration, and a final result that stays true to the original design vision.

Our in-house fabrication studio supports rapid prototyping, CNC milling, high-end millwork, finishing, and installation. This workflow allows our team to explore unconventional forms, test materials, and resolve details early—long before they reach the site. Prototypes aren’t just previews; they’re working studies that inform structure, durability, and assembly. The result is a process that is both experimental and precise, giving clients confidence that what’s drawn can be built.

Supporting these processes is our ShopSabre Pro 408 CNC router, a high-precision machine that allows us to translate digital models into physical components with speed and accuracy. Its capabilities enable complex geometries, sculptural forms, and custom millwork to be produced in-house, reducing reliance on outside vendors and keeping the feedback loop between design and fabrication close.

This integration becomes most visible during prototyping and early fabrication studies. When developing the sculptural bar centerpiece at Ipanema, CNC milling studies established the form, which was then divided into multiple components and assembled into a continuous piece. Mock-ups supported client updates and technical refinement, while custom joinery systems ensured clean assembly. The team also explored waffle structures for curved soffits, using CNC-generated files to achieve complex geometries with consistency and control. It resulted to intentional features that feels expressive yet highly resolved.

agency of record

A similar iterative approach shaped the tufted wall and bar elements for Agency of Record, the team explored CNC-cut foam “tufting” to study depth and texture, followed by epoxy shell coatings to test durability. Lighting mockups and LED studies helped refine how illumination would interact with surfaces, while custom sconce prototypes clarified scale and detailing. Once validated, these studies informed the final millwork, from tufted panels and brass inlay details to fluted glass assemblies and layered bar elements, all fabricated in-house and grounded in what had already been tested.

That same digital-to-physical workflow carries into smaller-scale project like Dan Jones Coffee, where a CNC-crafted wood slat system curves from floor to ceiling to shape the counter and guide circulation. Each slat was digitally modeled and cut for precision, with joinery designed for efficient assembly. Paired with reflective and soft materials, the slatted geometry introduces warmth, rhythm, and a calm atmosphere.

Bolt’s fabrication mindset also extends beyond interiors into furniture and object-making. The Contour Canyon Table draws from the landscapes of Southern Utah, where parametric studies translated canyon topography into a layered table form. CNC-cut components allowed the flowing geometry to be produced with accuracy while maintaining durability. The result is a piece that feels light and sculptural yet grounded in function, showing how digital tools can transform natural inspiration into buildable design.

Bolt’s digital fabrication process is ultimately about alignment—from idea and execution, to concept and craft. With in-house tools, skilled fabricators, and an integrated workflow, our team can continuously test with confidence, build with accuracy, and deliver spaces where design intent remains intact from start to finish.
